Using Transitions
People often have trouble learning how to use transitions to make their text flow smoothly.  To help you out in this area, some examples of transitional elements are shown below.

1) When you want to add something to your previous statements, you can use:

also, and, and then, as well, besides, beyond that, first (second, third, last, and so on), for one thing, furthermore, in addition, moreover, next, what is more


2) When you want to compare something to your previous statements, you can use:

also, as well, both (neither), in the same way, likewise, similarly


3) When you want to contrast something to your previous statements, you can use:

although, be that as it may, but, even though, however, in contrast, nevertheless, on the contrary, on the other hand, whereas, yet


4) When you want to concede (a point), you can use:

certainly, granted that, of course, no doubt, to be sure


5) When you want to emphasize something, you can use:

above all, especially, indeed, in fact, in particular, most important, surely


6) When you want to illustrate something, you can use:

as a case in point, as an illustration, for example, for instance, in particular, one such, yet another


7) When you want to place something, you can use:

above, below, beside, beyond, farther, here, inside, nearby, next to, on the far side, opposite, outside, to the east (south, and so on)


8) When you want to qualify something, you can use:

perhaps


9) When you want to give a reason for something, you can use:

because, for


10) When you want to show a result of something, you can use:

and so, as a consequence, as a result, because of this, consequently, for this reason, hence, so, therefore, thus


11) When you want to summarize something, you can use:

all in all, finally, in brief, in other words, lastly, on the whole, to sum up


12) When you want to place something in time, you can use:

after a while, afterward, at last, at present, briefly, currently, during, eventually, finally, first (second, and so on), gradually, immediately, in the future, later, meanwhile, next, now, recently, soon, suddenly, then, as, while
